Leadership for Mission

By Rennan Dias on November 11, 2024

In Acts 6, we see the church facing a leadership problem. As the church grew, a complaint arose that the widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. The apostles recognized the problem but didn’t let it derail their mission of preaching. Instead, they appointed seven qualified leaders to handle the practical needs, allowing the apostles to continue to focus on preaching the Word. The result? The church grew even more, and many came to faith.

This passage teaches us a number of things.

  • Problems Are Opportunities
Growth brings challenges—more people to shepherd, more needs to meet. But these challenges provide an opportunity to raise up new leaders. Instead of being overwhelmed, see these moments as a chance to empower others to serve.
  • Look for Leaders
As the apostles appointed leaders, we should also look for those already serving in our congregations. Leaders don’t have to be perfect; they just need to be faithful and willing to learn. Pay attention to those who are engaged, ask insightful questions, and show initiative.
  • Invest in Leadership Development
Leadership isn’t just about managing programs—it’s about mentoring. Take time to walk alongside potential leaders in the everyday rhythms of ministry: study the Word together, visit the sick, and involve them in the preparation of sermons and ministry tasks. (Stay tuned for more on this topic in a couple of weeks!)

The early church grew because it raised up leaders to serve the practical needs, allowing the apostles to continue preaching. For our churches to grow, we need more leaders—leaders who serve, equip others, and advance the mission of God. As you plan for the future, see challenges as opportunities to raise up new leaders, and invest in their growth. By doing so, we can continue to multiply disciples and plant churches, all by the grace of God.
